Initially, the (Assyrian Cultural Directorate) established in Erbil 1996, by a decision of the Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament, and was inaugurate in July 1998 in Ankawa, to become "Directorate of Syriac Culture & Art in Erbil" by a decision of the Regional Parliament as well, in summer 2007, according to our deputies demand in the Parliament and the Cabinet at that time. Parliament has therefore decided to raise the Directorate to General Directorate then "the General Directorate of Syriac Culture and Art" was found in Kurdistan Region in October 2007, and joined with it the "Directorate of Syriac Culture and Art". After three months, exactly in February 19th, 2008, the General Directorate of Syriac Culture and Art was opened in Ankawa city after furnishing it and assigning more employers. Less than one year passed, the General Directorate opened a branch in Dahuk city on April 1st, 2008, under the title " Directorate of Syriac Culture and Arts in Dahuk" . Three months later, the Directorate of "Syriac Heritage and Popular Arts" opened its building in Ankawa in September 2009. As well the G.D. is planning to open a third branch in Suleimania city under the title" The Directorate of Syriac Culture and Arts in Suleimania", in addition to other sub directorates in some villages and townships in Erbil and Dahuk governorates. The G.D. of Syriac Culture and Arts is a governmental foundation and it is one of 9 other general directorates of Ministry of Culture and Youth in the KRG. The divan structure of our G.D. consists of departments that include Theater, Music, Media, Fine Arts, Children Culture, Publishing, Printing, and Banipal Quarterly, in addition to Administrative departments, like Administration, Human resource, Accounting, Planning, and Services. Our objective is revive our national heritage and culture, which encountered neglect and marginalization for many years, as well developing our contemporary literature, arts and culture, to introduce it to the Kurdish, Iraqi people and the other nations. Another objective is handling our writers, artists and supporting them by publishing their literary products, presenting theater bids and organizing art exhibition.
